FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – A puppy was dropped off at the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter two weeks ago, with its ears cut by scissors.

Since then, animal shelter volunteers tell WHNT News 19 that dog has made an amazing recovery.

Now the animal’s former owner, faces charges for the crime.

So far, prosecutors have filed misdemeanor animal cruelty charges, but as the investigation continues, more charges may still be handed down.

Shelter leaders say, the dog’s former owner refuses to reveal who actually performed the cutting with scissors.

According to prosecutors, with the severity of the case, the district attorney’s office is working to get the misdemeanor charges upgraded to felonies.

“This sets a precedent for people who are not going to be able to do these kind of things to a dog,” said shelter volunteer, Debbie Rappuhn.

Finally healed, the puppy named Soleil, is going to a dog rescue in New York City, where she will be adopted to a new family.

It’s been a rough start for the four month old puppy, but shelter leaders say, Soleil will no doubt have a great life.

“She`s going to go from being a poor, mutilated, abused puppy, to a little la-di-dog, and I`m so happy for her,” said Soleil’s foster, Debby Nelson.

“This dog is going to have the life every dog wishes for and it came to us from being totally mistreated,” added Rappuhn.

Soleil is a shelter success story, and even though the dog is heading north to find a forever home, shelter volunteers say this puppy has made a mark on many people here in Alabama.
